Packaging and package labels on food products are important and serve many purposes, among them protecting the product from contamination, encouraging the consumer to buy the product, and giving information on how to use the product.
Manufacturers have understood this principle for hundreds of years, and it is surprising how some of the most iconic label designs came about. Take for example, the H.J. Heinz Company, the creator of one the first major brands of mass-marketed ketchup. During the 19th century manufacturers often made condiments using preservatives such as benzoate of soda, borax salicylic acid, benzoic, and formaldehyde, all of which could make consumers sick.
By 1904 Heinz developed the first preservative-free recipe for ketchup. To highlight the purity of his product, H.J. Heinz began using see-through bottles for packaging, rather than the amber colored bottles used by competitors. The clear glass and shape of the bottle showcased the color of the product to encourage the consumer to purchase. The narrow-neck design of the Heinz Ketchup bottle soon became the norm for the industry. One problem with the bottle was that the ketchup often turned an unattractive dark red color when exposed to air. To disguise discoloration of the product that could occur inside the neck of the bottle, Heinz came up with the distinctive neck band label.
