With HR 3204, The Drug Quality and Security Act, having finally been signed by the President, we can expect to see a lot more activity in the area of tracking and traceability for pharmaceutical products.
It is important to be able to establish traceability from pallets of product to the cases that make up the pallet to the bundles of cartons in the cases, down to the unit carton level. Controlled serialization is a key part of being able to get into compliance.
LSI by ID Technology has many years experience with labeling pharmaceutical products and we have teamed up with some of the key providers of serialization systems, such as Systech to introduce integrated labeling and serialization solutions for the pharmaceutical industry.
Our Model 1220 Pharma Bundle labeling solution is specially designed to play an important part in this process.
This print apply labeling system is intended to be positioned in the packaging line between where the cartons are aggregated into bundles and the case packing station.
Unit cartons, serialized with a unique 2D barcode and are assembled into the bundle with the barcodes facing in the same direction.
As the assembled bundles enter the infeed of the Model 1220, a machine vision based camera system reads all of the 2D barcodes, which allows those cartons to now be assigned to that particular bundle.
A label is then printed and applied to the bundle, this label also containing a unique barcode that is set as the parent of the unit barcodes on the cartons.
After label application, the bundle passes through a second machine vision station where the bundle label is verified. Any bundles that failed either of the inspections (unit carton barcode or bundle barcode) are rejected and removed from the line automatically before having the chance to leave the labeling system.
The Model 1220 is one a range of LSI labels specially designed for the special needs of the pharmaceutical industry. It uses Allen Bradley controls, is designed to be validated and is 21 CFR Part 11 Compliant when integrated with compliant serialization management software.
