After remaining static for five decades, retail barcoding is set for a significant upgrade.
GS1’s Sunrise 2027 will introduce data-rich 2D barcodes to replace traditional UPCs, benefiting brands, retailers, and consumers.
The new GS1 Digital Link format will allow a single QR code containing the product GTIN, expiration date, lot number, and serialization.
Consumers can scan these codes for real-time product info; point-of-sale systems in retail stores will also support them.
Unlike current UPC barcodes that are pre-printed on labels and packaging, these new codes will often be added during the product packaging process.
One printing system that is ideal for printing these new barcodes is Code Tech’s RAZR system.
RAZR is a new generation of high-resolution piezoelectric inkjet printer (PIJ) that can print excellent quality barcodes, text and graphics onto a diverse range of packaging materials.
With a print height of 34mm, RAZR can print GS1 Digital Link QR Codes that would be too high for a single thermal inkjet (TIJ) printhead, giving this concept a distinct advantage. In addition, the 250 ml ink cartridge will provide maximum uptime and can be replaced without stopping printing.
With up to 600 dpi print resolution, you can be assured that your barcodes will easily pass the ISO/ANSI verification scores and meet the requirements of the GS1 standard.
If you are investigating how best to implement the new 2D barcodes into your packaging, check out RAZR and see how it can help you. You can also visit this post to see some of our other technologies available for printing these barcodes: Printing GS1 Digital Link.
