The DS6708 scanner from Symbol has been one of the best scanner for reading 2D barcodes such as Datamatrix for ages. The biggest problem has been that it is tethered, it needs to be connected to the host computer by a USB or keyboard cable – not the most mobile solution.
To be fair, there is always the excellent DS3578 cordless scanner, but this is rather expensive and a bit of an overkill for many applications.
Enter the brand new DS6878. From what I can gather this is a blue-tooth enabled version of the old faithful tethered scanner and I think it is going to be a success product for Moto. Come to think of it, I’ve come across a number of jobs for which this new scanner would have been ideal.
The DS6878 can be programmed using Symbol’s 123Scan utility – I use this all the time to extract the data fields from UID labels and other useful tricks.
So I think that the DS6878, along with it’s partner the laser scanner LS4278 puts Symbol/Moto in a really good spot in the mid-range cordless scanner market. I’d be happy to personally use them, what about you?
