It wasn’t too long ago that a YAG laser marking system was huge – both in physical size and in the capital needed to purchase one.
The NANO laser from ID Technology and Macsa ID, has been specially engineered to be compact and easy to install at a total cost that brings the advantages of laser marking to a lot of new applications.
The NANO is air cooled and comes with Ethernet and Serial communications, allowing it to be easily integrated into factory automation systems. The operator can communicate with NANO using the touch screen interface, a handheld unit or from a PC.

NANO comes in two versions. NANO D is a DPSS Laser, using Nd: YAG medium, producing a laser output wavelength of 1064 nm. It comes in 4, 6 and 20 Watt versions so it can handle many marking applications – many metal and plastic products can be marked with high quality text, barcodes and graphics.
The other NANO is the NANO F. The F version is a fiber laser, producing a laser output at 1062 nm. The NANO F comes in two power levels, 10 or 20 Watt.
Which one should you buy? Well, first that 2 nm difference in wavelength between the D and the F NANO really can make a difference on some substrates – we’ll want to test the lasers on your products to see which is the best for you.
There is also quite a price difference between the two models, the NANO F does not have the low power options of the D and the fiber laser systems tend to be more expensive anyway. The fiber laser system is also a little larger than the NANO.
One very important consideration is going to be the ongoing operational cost. While both models have all the advantages of a modern laser marker, the diode system of the NANO D would usually have to be replaced at least once a year, compared to about every 10 years on the NANO F.
So when choosing a NANO laser, you can see that there are a number of considerations that need to be taken into account:
The application itself – which wavelength works best (or maybe a CO2 laser will be better than a YAG), what power output is required to produce a high quality mark in the allowed time.
Then of course, the operational cost of the two models needs to be taken into account. We will provide you with all the info you need to be able to make the right decision for your business.
Once we’ve helped you decide which hardware works best for you, we are just getting started. ID Technology will make sure you have everything needed to make your new laser marking system a complete success.
Laser safety is an important issue and we can help with solutions such as our iLaserBox self-contained workstation as well as mounting hardware and fume extraction. Our service team can ensure that everything is installed correctly and help with the marking formats and getting the laser integrated into your system.
With so many variables when it comes to acquiring a laser marking system, it makes sense to consult a laser expert at an early stage in your project.
Here at ID Technology, we have labeling and marking specialists all over North America as well as dedicated laser experts. We’ll be happy to produce marked samples, carry out on-site demos at your facility and generally help you every step of the way, from concept to final success.
Maybe NANO isn’t the right solution for you? We have a comprehensive line up of laser coding and marking systems, from the simple iCON compact CO2 laser for package coding up to the F9000 P, Pulsed Fiber Laser with available 50 Watt power for serious industrial marking.
