November 1, 2012 marks the start of Movember, a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancers. Movember works to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge to increase the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
Participants of the Movember movement are known as Mo Bros. The Mo Bros of Winco ID have created team Winco Whiskers, captained by John Burke. The team has to start off clean-shaven on November 1, and in honor of the event, David Holliday and John Burke participated in a “shave-off” at a local barber shop. Wilfred’s Barber Shop, in Nashua NH, is a classic barber shop with old-school barber chairs, straight razor shaves, hot towels, and lots of ambiance.
For the rest of Movember, David, John, and the Mo Bros all over the world will carefully tend to their growing moustaches while seeking donations for this important event. Supporting their efforts are the Mo Sistas, women who have joined the team to assist with fundraising and to help spread the word about men’s health issues.
The rules of conduct for participation are very clear:
- Register at Movember.com and then each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face.
- Each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache.
- There is to be no joining of the Mo to one’s sideburns; that’s considered a beard.
- There is to be no joining of the handlebars to one’s chin; that’s considered a goatee.
- Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true country gentleman.
Simple enough! You can check out the Winco Whiskers site at http://winco.cc/WincoWhiskers to join their team, check on their progress, or make a donation. If you would like more information about this cause, or to register a team of your own, go to http://us.movember.com
