RFID Journal recently published the results of a GS1 pilot study showing how RFID can successfully track international wine shipments.
GS1 Italy and GS1 Hong Kong participated in the pilot study, which consisted of tracking shipments from four Italian wine companies to two Hong Kong distributors. Each bottle, case, and pallet of the Italian wine had a label that included an RFID chip; the EPC Gen 2 RFID tags and readers were used in the wine cases to track shipments as they went from Europe to Asia.
The results showed that RFID technology makes the supply chain more visible to wine producers, importers, and distributors. In fact, the accuracy of the supply chain data increased from 80 to 100 percent.
Using the RFID data, retailers can have visibility of movement of the wine products from vineyards to their destination to improve inventory management and quality assurance.
